Bike Tours at Large!

November, 2006

Well, fall has seriously fallen here in Ottawa, and our little team has been going nuts scurrying around like squirrels preparing for the winter! The reasons for all this scurry and hurry: making the call out for the 2007 bike tours and tour coordinators; another awards ceremony; receiving foundation support for our strategic 5-year plan; Otesha’s Hope-full Open Home events; and other hopeful stories to share!

Otesha’s five 2007 bike tours!

And now, the news that everyone has been waiting for (drumroll please;-): the bike tours are officially announced! Otesha is now accepting applications for rockin’ team members; tour support interns, and tour coordinators for the 2007 cycling and presenting bike tours:

  • Vancouver Island Tour: May 1st to June 30th;

  • Rocky Mountain Tour:  May 1st to June 30th;

  • Maritimes Tour: July 1st to August 31st;

  • Lake Superior Tour: August 17th to October 17th;

  • Georgian Bay Tour: August 17th to October 17th.

These tours will bring Otesha’s hope-filled message to thousands of youth and families in rural areas of Canada, make even stronger connections to the diverse communities and people who support Otesha in so many ways, and train 75 more young people to be effective social and environmental sustainability advocates! For more information check out the tour web page.

or the 'opportunities' page to view the job descriptions (broken link).  If you are, or know anyone on any of the routes, please get in touch so we can make sure that they get to meet the teams/arrange a presentation/or help feed/house a team!

Otesha’s most recent award

Jessica travelled to Halifax in October to accept the Canadian EECOM (Environmental Education and Communication) Excellence in Education Award for Outstanding Non-Profit, which we were incredibly honoured to receive. The best part is that they organized a bike tour to the conference itself, so Jessica and other adventurous delegates go to arrive in 'on-two-wheels style' to the conference.  For her keynote address, Jessica was joined by four members of the Denison Otesha Triple-H team, who framed her speech with some hilarious scenes from Morning Choices play. What a weekend!

The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation supports Otesha’s 5 year plan!

As you know, this summer we poured much of our energy into creating Otesha's first-ever stragic plan, outlining the path Otesha will take over the next five years, and the goals we hope to achieve. The fruits of this labour are already beginning to show - in the beginning of October we received the incredible news that the McConnell foundation will provide the financial support Otesha needs to become financially self-sufficient over the next five years! See the executive summary of the five year plan.

Otesha's Hopeful Open Home

Otesha is opening its doors to the Ottawa community, inviting people to an evening of inspiration and information on what Otesha is accomplishing with our programs. If you are in the Ottawa area, consider coming by – just be sure to RSVP! Check out the invite (broken link). This event lasts an hour and is great fun!

And other fun stories to share  This site has some great essays and stories on world-changing happening all over the world. Look for the story: How to Wean a Town Off Fossil Fuels about a town in Ireland with a plan to go fossil-fuel free by 2021!

This story warmed all of our free hug hearts here in the office. It's about a guy who is determined to offer free hugs to everyone, despite resistance from local authorities... The Great Lakes Tour tried similar antics last year - and more free hugs will spread across the country with bike tour teams next summer!
