Your Actions: Stories

Anything your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve. We are "only young people", with little prior experience, who believe firmly that individuals can change the world. This belief has brought us to where we are today. Without having faith in our dreams, the Otesha Project wouldn't exist! And we're not the only ones following our dreams:

Juan Mann had just returned home to Sydney when he realized that he had become a tourist in his hometown. Standing in the arrivals terminal, all he wanted was someone to welcome him and hug him. So he got some cardboard and a marker and made a sign with the words "Free Hugs" on both sides and thus began the Free Hug Campaign that became widely known through this video. Sometimes, a hug is all we need.

Ryan Hreljac has a dream for everyone in Africa to have clean water. When he was six years old, he began raising money to build a well in Africa. This endeavour grew to become an organization called Ryan's Well, and to date his campaign has raised over $800,000 and built hundreds of wells!!! He has brought clean water and hope to thousands.

Julia "Butterfly" Hill, after learning that an ancient redwood forest in California was about to be cut down, Julia spent 738 days - including two winters - occupying a 1000-year-old tree known as Luna. She absolutely refused to come down from the tree until the Pacific Lumber Company agreed to protect the tree and a 3-acre buffer zone around it! She now continues to spread the message that everyone makes a difference in the world.

Craig Kielburger had a dream to stop child labour. At the age of 12, he was inspired by a child labour activist in Pakistan to take action. Today the organization he started has grown to more than 100,000 young members, and to date Free The Children has spoken to over 1 million people, built over 350 schools, shipped over 2.5 million dollars in medical supplies, and taken countless children out of dangerous and unjust conditions. He has made a difference. You too can make a difference. All that's required is realizing the power you have as an individual, finding your reason to dream... then DREAMING BIG!

Every day we read the news about all about all the horrible things people are doing.

Yet, along our travels we've met thousands of amazing people doing incredible things!

We want to hear your story, or the story of someone that has inspired you. It doesn't have to be anything huge either - anything that gives you hope is great - whether it be a new cool project, or someone in your class who always gives high fives or brings litter-free lunches. We'll feature it on the site, helping to spread the empowerment juice around the world!
